Taylor: Gym facilites improving after grant
Katie Taylor has said she hopes facilities at her gym will improve in the coming weeks.
Ireland's four-time world champion has been speaking following her success in China last week.
Earlier, junior Sports Minister Michael Ring defended the sports grants system after a report in today's Sunday Independent described "third world conditions" at Bray Boxing Gym, where Taylor trains. The gym is also used by her fellow Olympian Adam Nolan.
The gym has been granted €25,000 towards the installation of toilet facilities.
On a visit to the midlands today, Katie officially opened Tullamore's Spartacus Boxing Club, calling it a "world-class facility".
When asked by Midlands 103 if she felt supported as an Olympic athlete, given the training facilities, Katie said she hoped they improved rapidly.
"We're very happy with the location of the boxing club, but we have no toilet facilities there at the moment, which is a big disadvantage," she said.
"We are getting work done on it at the moment, so hopefully the club will be (well-equipped) in the coming weeks."
