Irish team miss out on Olympic place

The Irish 4x200m Freestyle team took a 6th place finish at the European Championships in Debrecen, Hungary today.

The quartet of Sycerika McMahon, Melanie Nocher, Bethany Carson and Nuala Murphy bettered their time from earlier today finishing in 8:09.15 but unfortunately this will not secure Olympic qualification for the team.

Ireland will still have a shot at qualifying a relay in the 4x100m Medley on Sunday, though not practiced in the medley together, the girls outstanding performances so far this week will give them an outside chance.

In the 200m Breaststroke semi-final, both Shani Stallard (2:32.11) and Fiona Doyle (2:33.97) could not lower their times posted earlier today finishing 15th and 16th overall.

So far, all eight squad members have now made either a semi-final or final at these Championships making it Ireland’s most successful European Championships ever.

In action tomorrow are today’s relay quartet of Sycerika McMahon, Melanie Nocher, Bethany Carson and Nuala Murphy competing in the heats of the 200m Freestyle.

Murphy will also swim the heats of the 1500m Freestyle. Karl Burdis is in the heats of the 200m Backstroke.
