Joanne Cuddihy bowed out of the World Championships after false starting in her 400 metres semi-finals in Daegu.

On a night when the sport’s biggest name, Usain Bolt, also jumped the gun to relinquish his 100m crown, the Dublin athlete did not give herself a chance.

Cuddihy would in all honesty have had little chance of making it through anyway, with two of the world’s top three over the distance this year, Russia’s Anastasiya Kapachinskaya and Botswana’s Amantle Montsho also in her heat.

California-born Tori Pena went out in pole vault qualifying.

Pena, who has an Irish grandmother, cleared 4.10m, but was unable to get past 4.25m.
