Up to 15,000 spectators are expected to turn out in the Midlands today, as the Waterways Ireland triAthlone takes place.

More than 2,000 people have signed up to compete in the event, which begins with a swim in the River Shannon this afternoon.

The swim will be followed by a cycle through south Co Roscommon, before the town-centre run which will see it wrap up in Athlone.

The event is running in tandem with Athlone Town Council's Summerfest, which offers entertainment and activities throughout the weekend.
