Moylette and Ward complete golden double for Ireland

Ray Moylette and Joe Ward pulled off a golden double for Ireland in the European Amateur Championships in Ankara today.

The golds came for 17-year-old Joe Ward in the light-heavyweight division while light-welterweight Ray Moylette beat England’s Thomas Stalker into the silver medal position.

Stalker had to settle for silver in his first major tournament at light-welterweight as he looked flat against Moylette, whose bustling style earned him a deserved 18-10 victory.

Meanwhile, Ward capped a dream international senior debut with an 18-10 win over Russia’s Nikita Ivanov in the light-heavyweight final.

Victory puts Ward ahead in the fight with Beijing silver medallist Ken Egan for the 81kg berth.
