Petrov joins Perez in hospital

Vitaly Petrov has today joined Sergio Perez in the Princess Grace hospital following a crash towards the end of an incident-packed Monaco Grand Prix.

Petrov was involved in an incident with Jaime Alguersuari in his Toro Rosso on lap 69 just as the three leaders in winner Sebastian Vettel, runner-up Fernando Alonso and third-placed Jenson Button were poised to lap a gaggle of cars.

Alguersuari initially ran over a kerb and into the back of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren, his momentum carrying him into a barrier on the approach to La Rascasse.

Petrov in his Renault immediately ploughed into the back of the Toro Rosso, with the impact understood to have knocked him unconscious.

The accident resulted in the race being red flagged as an ambulance was required to attend to Petrov, leading to a 21-minute delay before the final six laps could be completed.

Renault’s Twitter feed read: “Update on Vitaly – Conscious. Talks. Complains about leg pain but no fracture. Goes to hospital.”

Perez, meanwhile, is to stay in hospital for a second night tonight and undergo further scans tomorrow following his heavy crash during qualifying yesterday in his Sauber.
