Murphy narrowly misses out on medal
Ireland's Grainne Murphy has missed out on a medal at the European Swimming Championships by just five hundreths of a second.
The Wexford teenager produced the best swim of her life in this afternoon's 800 metre freestyle final in Budapest, but touched the wall in fourth place.
Murphy was always in a prominent position in a high-quality field and made the final turn in second place, but she didn't have the speed over the final 50 metres to hold on to a medal position.
However, her time of 8 minutes 25.04 seconds took nearly four seconds off her own national record.
Denmark's Lotte Friis led from start to finish to take gold ahead of Ophelie Etienne of France, while Italy's Federica Pellegrini pippe Murphy for bronze.
