Ireland's Barry Murphy has enjoyed a remarkable morning at the World Swimming Championships in Rome.

Murphy set a new championship record of 27.26 seconds in the 50m breaststroke only to see the time beaten in the later heats.

His new Irish record gets him into tonight's semi-finals as the eighth-fastest seed.

Murphy is the first Irish swimmer ever to break a championship record.
