Egan to remain in amateur ranks

Olympic silver medallist Kenny Egan has announced that he is to remain an amateur boxer and target the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The Dubliner, who captained the Irish boxing team in Beijing, confirmed his decision at a press conference this afternoon.

There had been speculation that he would follow his international team-mate Darren Sutherland into the professional ranks.

Sutherland began his pro-career last night with a first round stoppage of Bulgaria's Georgi Iliev at Dublin City University.
