Katie Taylor guaranteed bronze after quarter-final blitzkrieg
Katie Taylor is guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the 5th AIBA Women's World Championships in Ningbo City, China following a quarter final blitzkrieg of Argentine lightweight Peralta Celeste this morning.
The Bray woman, the current World, European and European Union champion, forced Celeste into two standing counts before the fight was stopped in the first round with the 22-year-old Irishwoman 10-1 up.
Taylor, whose dad Peter, a former Irish senior champion, is working her corner at the Ningbo Youngor Gymnasium, will meet Ayzznat Gadzhieva of Russia in Friday's 60Kg semi final.
Speaking after this mornings fight, Taylor said that she was very pleased with her performance against Celeste.
She said: "I felt very sharp in there and by timing was good and everything flowed for me She was a very tall opponent and I was expecting a tougher fight. I'm delighted with the win and I will now build myself up for my next challenge."
The semi-finals and finals will be held Friday and Saturday.
