Four Irish boxers in quarters of World Youth Championships

Three Irish boxers joined Thomas McCarthy in the quarter finals of the AIBA World Youth Championships following last 16 wins in Guadalajara, Mexico last night and in the early hours of this morning.

All four will be in quarter-final action tonight and early tomorrow morning and four wins will guarantee Ireland at least four bronze medals.

On-fire Mayo lightweight Ray Moylett produced one of the performances of his career so far to see off Fred Evans of Wales - the 2007 European Cadet champion - on an 11-9 verdict.

And Crumlin, light welterweight ace Jamie Kavanagh followed that up with an impressive 8-0 victory over Francesco Nespro of Italy.

David Joe Joyce, of the St Michael's Athy club, was also in top form, showing excellent offensive and defensive skills in beating Abuyazit Ugurchiyev of Kazakhstan by a six point margin.

Tyrone McCullagh had to pull out of his last sixteen clash with Marcos Cabral of Argentina because of a hand injury.

The Donegal bantamweight injured the thumb in his right hand in his win over Shokhruth Khudjabekov of Uzbekistan on Tuesday.

Local time applies to time of all bouts. Mexico is six hours behind Ireland.
