Guaranteed silver for Egan in Beijing

Irish boxer Kenny Egan has defeated Great Britain’s Tony Jeffries in his Light Heavyweight Olympic semi-final today.

The 26-year-old Dubliner out punched his opponent to secure a 10 - 3 points win at the Workers' Gymnasium in Beijing this afternoon.

Egan took an early lead but after round one the two boxers were level at 1-1.

The Dubliner stepped up his performance to finish the second round 4-1 up.

By the third round Egan had extended his lead to 8-1 and finished the bout on 10-3.

The victory assures Egan of a silver medal at least.
