Heavyweight pair and light double miss out at Olympic qualifier
Ireland’s heavyweight pair (M2-) of Sean Casey and Jonno Devlin, and lightweight double (LM2x) of Eugene and Richard Coakley both missed out on a place in tomorrow’s finals of the Olympic qualifier, when finishing fourth and fifth respectively in their semi-finals today.
Both crews needed to be in the top three in the semi-finals to progress to tomorrow’s finals and keep their hopes of qualifying these boats for the Olympics alive.
With no more Olympic qualification opportunities the pair of Casey and Devlin will now focus on selection for the Irish boat already qualified for the Beijing Olympics; the heavyweight men’s four (M4-), due to race at the World Cup here in Poznan later this week.
The remaining Irish boat at this regatta; the lightweight men’s four (LM4-) will race in the final tomorrow. They must finish inside the top two in that final to secure one of the two final Olympic qualification spots on offer. Should the lightweight four qualify the lightweight double of Eugene and Richard Coakley will focus on selection for that boat also.
