World number one Shaun Murphy has advanced to the second round of the Maplin UK Snooker Championship in Telford with a 9-5 win over Cardiff's Paul Davies.

It is just the second time Murphy, from Rotherham, has reached the last 16 of the event.

He reached the semi-finals of the Northern Ireland trophy and Grand Prix and Murphy said he needs to continue in that vein.
