Brazil reveal Olympic bid
The Brazilian Olympic Committee have announced they will attempt to bring the 2016 Olympic Games to Rio de Janeiro.
The committee had handed in all the necessary papers to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday but only revealed its candidature last night through its website.
Among the official documents sent to the IOC is an application letter from the chief of the Rio de Janeiro Prefecture, Cesar Maia, and Brazil Olympic Committee president Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
Also included were guarantee letters signed by president Luiz Inacio Da Silva and Rio de Janeiro state governor Sergio Cabral.
In those letters, the government has pledged to make up any shortfall in the local Olympic Committee’s finances.
“It is important to make provisions for any potential problems in advance as well as obtain guarantees from the three levels of government for this project,” said Nuzman.
“The co-operation of the different governments was crucial for the success of the Pan American and Para Pan American Games in Rio this year and will be truly important if it is to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016.”
