Cuddihy smashes Irish record but misses out on final
Kilkenny athlete Joanne Cuddihy smashed Karen Shinkins’ eight-year-old Irish record during today’s semi final for the 400m at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka.
Cuddihy finished in a time of 50.73 to take fourth place in her semi final, beating Shinkin’s record of 51.07, which was set in 1999.
However Cuddihy was unlucky not to make the final as one of two fastest losers, with first and second qualifying automatically for Wednesday’s final.
Earlier today, Roisin McGettigan and Fionnuala Britton finished 10th and 12th respectively in the final of the 3000m Steeplechase.
This was an impressive performance by Britton at her first World Championships as she finished in a time of 9.48.09, while McGettigan came home in a time of 9.39.80.
