Athletics Ireland announce team for World Youth Championships
Athletics Ireland have announced their squad for this year’s World Youth Championships which take place in Ostrava, Czech Republic from the July 11-15.
The team consists of Colin Quirke (Crusaders AC), who will compete in the shot putt and discuss and Barry Pender (St Abban’s AC), Kourosh Fouroghi (Star of the Sea AC) and Grainne Moggan (Brothers Pearse AC), all of whom will compete in the High Jump.
Ireland will only be sending four athletes this year as the championships take place within ten days of the European Youth Olympics and several athletes have decided to concentrate solely on these.
Team manager Geraldine Nolan said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for some of our younger athletes to experience competition on the world stage. Colin Quirke, who is son of Olympian Paul Quirke, is an exciting talent, while Kourosh Fouroghi has recently jumped 2.11m and he is still only 16. We are hoping that all four athletes can compete at a high level in the championships."
