Concern over street circuits

BMW Sauber boss Mario Theissen has expressed concern that Formula One’s new street circuits could compromise safety.

Valencia and Singapore will join the calendar from next season, followed in 2009 by an Abu Dhabi track that incorporates some of the city’s roads.

Singapore will hold the sport’s first night-time grand prix, further adding to the uncertainty, as well as the spectacle, that is a feature of motorsport held within cities.

“Racing on street circuits in city centres is spectacular and improves the show,” said Theissen.

“That’s something we support – as long as the stringent safety standards are met.

“It has to be admitted that realising these safety standards in street races is difficult.

“Nonetheless, the safety of all those involved must be the top priority when it comes to the evaluation of street circuits.”

Since the US GP left downtown Phoenix in 1991, Monaco has been the only dedicated street venue on the calendar, although tracks in Melbourne and Montreal utilise public park roads.
