Selby scoops award

Qualifier Mark Selby has already won one battle with Shaun Murphy – whatever the outcome of their semi-final clash in the 888.com World Championships in Sheffield.

Members of the Snooker Writers Association have voted his performance in reaching the last four for the first time the most meritorious achievement of the tournament.

As a result the 23-year-old Selby has been awarded the 888.com Silver Chip in recognition of him overcoming Steven Lee, Peter Ebdon and Ali Carter on his way to the best-of-33 frames semi-final.

Selby received more votes than Murphy despite his splendid performance in recovering from 12-7 down to defeat Matthew Stevens 13-12 in the quarter-finals.

The other contender was Northern Ireland youngster Mark Allen for his shock victory over former world champion Ken Doherty.

SWA spokesman Trevor Baxter said: “The judges found it hard to choose between three potential winners and it wasn’t until the final votes were cast that Mark Selby got the nod.”
