Gillick hails Irish supporters

Ireland's David Gillick has successfully retained his 400 metres title at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The Dublin athlete pipped German runner Bastian Swillims on the line.

Gillick hailed the support he received as magnificent.

He said: "Because it's Birmingham, I'm only training forty minutes up the road.

"The amount of Irish here was phenomenal. I'll never forget the victory lap back in Madrid, but this was sweeter, God, I don't how many Irish were there but it was packed full of them. It was just brilliant to see them jumping up and down and giving them something to cheer about."
