Joe Perry negotiated his first hurdle at the Welsh Open by beating former world champion John Parrott 5-2 in the first round in Newport tonight.

Perry was an 80-1 shot to pocket the £35,000 (€52,533) first prize before the tournament began and eased to victory over Parrott by winning the last three frames.
