Thorpe announces retirement from swimming

Australia’s swimming superstar Ian Thorpe has announced his immediate retirement from the sport at the age of 24.

The five-times Olympic gold medallist confirmed he had decided to “discontinue” his swimming career in order to move on to the “next phase” of his life.
