Defar breaks record

Meseret Defar broke the world 3,000 metres road running record in today's Newcastle/Gateshead meeting with a time of eight minutes 46.9 seconds.

Ethiopia's Olympic 5,000m champion bettered the mark of 8min 53sec achieved by Germany's Luminita Zaituc on home soil in Freiburg five years ago.
