Former world champion Damon Hill believes Jenson Button has a real chance of a dream first win in front of his home fans at the British Grand Prix next month.

Hill, who recently took over as president of Silverstone owners the British Racing Drivers’ Club, knows the pressure of performing in front of a home crowd from his days as a title challenger.

He believes Button is certain to fight for the podium in the June 11 race and tipped the 26-year-old as a surprise contender for victory, despite a season dominated by Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher so far.

He said: “This has been one of the best starts to a Formula One season for some time. Alonso and Schumacher are locked in battle at the top, but it would be great to see Jenson get on the podium at Silverstone.

“He’s under pressure from the British media and public to get that elusive first win, and if Honda can move up a few places in Monaco, he could definitely make it on to the podium at Silverstone in front of a hugely passionate home crowd.

“Maybe even get his first win – it’s a serious possibility.”

Silverstone bosses recently admitted they are unlikely to host a sell-out race, despite 100,000 capacity crowds for the last two years.

An earlier date and a clash with football’s World Cup have been blamed but since announcing the shortfall, ticket sales have been brisk and organisers expect to get close to the new 85,000 capacity.
