Gascoyne splits from Toyota

Mike Gascoyne has officially split from Toyota, a day after he was suspended from his post as technical director.

The Englishman was relieved of his duties yesterday after a row over how to improve the under-performing team.

But that suspension has become a permanent separation after Gascoyne and Toyota agreed to part company immediately, although he will be paid by the team until November.

“Obviously it is the end of an era but nobody can dispute that Toyota has made a big step forward over the last two seasons,” he said.

“We have now reached a crossroads in our working relationship and I believe that it is the right time for us to part ways amicably and for me to move back to the UK where I can also enjoy spending more time with my family.

“I extend my thanks to all members of the team and wish them a successful future in Formula One.”

Gascoyne, a former Renault and Jordan technical chief, joined Toyota at the end of 2003.

The big-spending team’s first Gascoyne-planned car surpassed expectations last season, delivering Toyota’s first pole and podium positions on the way to fourth in the constructors’ championship.

But this season has seen a return to the under-achievement which has plagued Toyota in Formula One.

Team principal Tsutomu Tomita added: “Although we have reached a joint decision to go our separate ways, I wish to extend my sincerest gratitude to Mike for the indisputable contribution he has made to our team over the last few years.

“This separation should in no way undermine the work he has done, nor reflect his technical expertise. We all wish him well for the future.”
