Caldecott, who was 10th overall before today’s stage, crashed 155 miles into the 372-mile journey across Mauritania from Nouakchott to Kiffa.

The 41-year-old KTM rider, who set the fastest time on the third stage of the event, has become the 23rd competitor to die in the Dakar Rally’s 28-year history.

Last year’s rally was marred by two deaths, two-time former bike champion Fabrizio Meoni and Juan Manuel Perez both suffering fatal accidents.
