Holmes could quit today

Kelly Holmes will declare this morning whether she is to compete at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

If not, there is a strong chance Holmes will also announce her retirement.

The 35-year-old double Olympic gold medallist has been considering whether to make the trip to Melbourne with Team England next March, for what would be her fourth successive Commonwealth Games.

Should she run, Holmes would have her pick of the 800m or 1,500m. It was at the latter distance that Holmes won gold in 1994, in Canada, and 2002, in Manchester.

As recently as last week, Holmes claimed she was undecided whether to race, following a season in which injury forced her out of the European Indoor and World Championships. However, her recent training has gone well.

Holmes became a household name in August of last year with her Olympic golds in Athens, which crowned a career blighted by injuries.
