Manley bows out in Dublin

World number six Peter Manley suffered a shock defeat to qualifier John Magowan in the second round of the Skybet World Grand Prix in Dublin tonight.

Irishman Magowan, who lives in Donaghadee, completely outplayed the man known as ’One Dart’ to clinch a memorable 3-1 win.

But he has a few things to sort out ahead of his last-eight appearance tomorrow night – because his son Peter’s wedding takes place during the afternoon.

The venue, on the outskirts of Cavan, is more than 80 miles away from the Citywest Hotel and Magowan fears heavy traffic could prevent him getting back in time.

“The organisers say they may have to take me in the helicopter,” said Magowan, whose performances this week have virtually clinched him a place in the 2006 Ladbrokes.com World Championship.

“At that time of day the traffic is bad and I might not make it back to the hotel.”

Magowan, 64, edged the first set tonight before running away with the second.

Manley reeled off three straight legs to reduce the deficit but ’Mr Magoo’ dominated the fourth set to close out the match.
