Magee back on track
Former IBO super-middleweight champion Brian Magee got his career back on track with a second round stoppage of Armenian Varuzhan Davtyan at the National Stadium in Dublin tonight.
Belfast’s Magee, who lost a controversial decision in a European title fight in Germany in the summer, unloaded a blistering combination to stagger Davtyan midway through the second and a further barrage of punches led to the referee calling a halt.
Magee, who has been told by the European Boxing Union that he will get another chance to tackle EBU champion Vitali Tsypko, believes he has to stay busy in order to take his revenge when they meet again.
Magee said: “When I fought him the last time I hadn’t boxed in seven months and even though I thought I won the fight it was still a factor.
“Now I just want to remain active and I know that when I get my chance again I’ll beat him and if I have to go to Germany again I will.”
