Olympians thrill bumper crowd at Cork City sports

A large crowd turned out at the Mardyke this afternoon for the 54th running of the Bupa Ireland Cork City Sports.

The event was given added significance this year with Cork, as Capital of Culture, able to attract more Olympians than ever before.

Among those were Olympic long jump champion Dwight Phillips who started early.

The day began with local schools competing on the track, but it was the senior athletes that were the main draw and the first event of the day, the women's 200m, did not disappoint.

Yelena Nevmerzhitakaia of Belarus came home in a time of 23.14 seconds, ahead of England's Donna Fraser.

In the men's 200m, England's Marlon Devenish took the honours after dominating the race from the start.

There was further success for England in the men's 1500m when Nick McCormick, who had led from the beginning, held off a late surge from American Rob Myers to cross the line first.
