Irish miss out on medal
Ireland missed out on a bronze medal at the KT Cup in South Korea after China, ranked fourth in the world, won the third-placed play-off 5-2.
The Chinese led 3-0 at half-time and any hopes of a comeback were dashed when the Asian side scored their fourth four minutes after the interval.
In the 53rd minute Suzanne Beaney pulled one back, her first international goal, but China restored their four-goal cushion nine minutes from time and Jenny Burke’s late effort was just a consolation.
Linda Caulfield won her 100th cap and afterwards coach Riet Kuper said: “After six matches in eight days the heat finally took its toll on the team, but they have had a good tournament.”
