F1 qualifying reduced to Saturday only

Formula One’s new qualifying system has been formally ratified by world governing body the FIA.

All 10 teams agreed to ditch the unpopular Sunday-morning qualifying session over the weekend but they alone did not have the power to affect change.

That needed the support of the FIA’s world motorsport council and Formula One commission, which was confirmed today in a statement.

The new system, which sees drivers complete just one flying lap on Saturday afternoon in race trim, will come into force for the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring this weekend.
