Reid fight in doubt

Robin Reid’s IBF super-middleweight title challenge against American Jeff Lacy now looks doubtful after early negotiations collapsed.

Lacy, who looks likely to meet Welshman Joe Calzaghe later this year, had looked likely to first defend his title against Runcorn 34-year-old Reid on August 6 in Florida.

But Lacy’s promoter Gary Shaw said: “The only thing I can conclude is that Reid does not really want the fight.

“We have been negotiating in good faith with Reid’s representative, Jess Harding, something I cannot say about the Reid camp.

“The negotiations are over and Jeff has asked me to move on and find another high-calibre contender to challenge Jeff for his title in conjunction with the IBF. We are hopeful to be making that announcement shortly.”

The news will come as a blow to Reid, who is attempting to rebuild his career and has enjoyed two victories since losing to Sven Ottke in 2003.
