Amatuer Khan to fight on pro bills

Promoter Frank Warren today announced an historic deal which will see Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan boxing on professional shows next year.

Warren has struck an exclusive three-year deal with the Amateur Boxing Association for fighters from both codes to share the same bill.

It will begin in March when it is planned for Khan to appear on a show topped by Joe Calzaghe in Manchester.

The amateur fighters will appear on Warren’s shows as an England team taking on top international opposition under normal amateur rules.

Warren said: “This historic deal gives amateur fighters the chance to build a profile before they turn professional.”

It is clearly good business for the promoter, who remains as eager as ever to tempt Khan into the professional ranks.

Warren added: “I think it makes sense for Amir to have more time in the amateurs but I do not believe he will box in the next Olympics.

“But it is not all about Amir, although he is the catalyst for this deal, it will last for three years and involve the cream of the country’s top fighters.”
