Schumacher makes another mark on history
Michael Schumacher hopes he will go down in history as the only Formula One driver to have claimed a pole position and race win on the same day.
The world champion took top spot in yesterday morning’s delayed qualifying session for the Japanese Grand Prix after Typhoon Ma-on forced Saturday’s schedule at Suzuka to be scrapped.
Just three hours after celebrating his pole position the Ferrari driver was back in the car and preparing to win the race with ease.
Despite seemingly excelling at the improvised new format, Schumacher has no desire to see it used ever again.
He said: “I think that this day goes down in history in Formula One. I am pretty sure some people will think whether we should continue to do it that way. I have to say it was exciting but I prefer the old style.
“It is strange if you think you go straight out on Sunday morning and have to do a qualifying lap without any preparation, anything.”
