Ukrainian claims Great North glory

Ivan Heshko won a thrilling BUPA Great North Mile in Newcastle, England, this afternoon.

The Ukraine’s world 1,500metres bronze medallist took victory by the thickness of his vest from Eliud Kipchoge in four minutes 02.6 seconds.

Kipchoge, last year’s world 5,000m gold medallist, led from the gun until Heshko passed him with his very last stride.

The Kenyan was given the same time as the winner whose performance bettered the course record of four mins 03.08secs set last year by Briton Michael East.

Third place was claimed by Rui Silva, last month’s Olympic 1,500m bronze medallist.

The Portuguese athlete, who won the race two years ago, posted a time of 4:03.9.

East was the first Briton home. The Commonwealth 1,500m champion finished in 4:06.8.
