Culliton throws second best

Laois athlete Garrett Culliton ended his Paralympic challenge tonight by throwing his second personal best in the space of 24 hours.

The 34-year-old IT engineer, who claimed fourth in the pentathlon in Sydney, threw 6.74 metres on his second attempt in tonight's F52 Shot Put final to beat out his personal best (6.66).

For good measure the former rugby player went further - 6.81 - with his last throw for a tenth place finish. New Zealander Peter Martin bettered his own world record to 9.34 for gold.

Afterwards Culliton, who finished fifth last night in the discus (PB 15.86), said: "To get two personal bests in the Olympic stadium was great. I was hoping to finish higher but the standards were very high. Overall I'm very happy with how I performed."
