Delight as Sonia makes 5000m final

Sonia O'Sullivan has qualified for the final of the 5000m in Athens tonight, finishing as a fastest runner-up.

O'Sullivan finished seventh in her heat in a time of 14.59.61, which denied her direct qualification (top five) but made her the second fastest runner-up from the heats.

Ethiopia's Meseret Defar won Sonia's heat in a time of 14:52.39.

While there was delight as the Cobh athlete reached the final, things did not go so well for Maria McCambridge.

McCambridge came in 15th from heat 1 in a time of 15:57.42 and failed to make the final.
