Warren plots cagey course for Hatton
Promoter Frank Warren insists he will not be held to ransom by fans hoping to fast-track Ricky Hatton’s bid for world light-welterweight domination.
Warren has come under a barrage of criticism for failing to line up top-quality opposition for undefeated Mancunian Hatton.
The gloves were off after Guyanan Vivian Harris pulled out of a scheduled clash with the 25-year-old in October following a dispute over the purse – but Warren is urging fans to keep their eye on the bigger picture.
A win over American Mike Stewart on October 1 will finally put Hatton in line for a crack at the IBF title against the cream of the division.
Warren admitted: “Ricky needs the top fights. There is no doubt about it.
“All the top fighters fight each other, and we have to deliver those fights. But I will not be pushed into a situation that does not suit us.”
