Dunne continues progress with another win

Ireland's Bernard Dunne continued his progress in the US as he defeated Mexican Pedro Mora in a unanimous points decision.

Dubliner Dunne, known as Ben Dunne in the US, out-pointed journeyman Mora in the early hours this morning in Pala, San Diego, to claim his 13th career win on a 60-53, 59-54, 59-54 points decision.

The 24-year-old featherweight, returning from a three-month layoff due to a right hand injury, was rarely tested against the Mexican, earning him a fourth consecutive points decision success.

Working his left jab in the first, Dunne scored a double left hook to Mora’s head, almost shuddering his opponent into an early dismissal.

The Irishman, who moves up two places to 53rd in the world rankings, sent Mora to the floor in the fourth with a straight right hand.

But back came the South American, showing the durability which has seen him come back from seven knock-outs in the last two-and-a-half years, to pilfer the fifth round on two score cards as Dunne visibly tired.

The Neilstown native regrouped well though to close out the final sixth round with a flurry of stinging jabs.
