Mosley: Schumacher deserves success

Motorsport boss Max Mosley claims Michael Schumacher’s dominance of Formula One this season has not harmed the sport.

Schumacher starts today’s qualifying sessions as the overwhelming favourite to take pole position and can set a new record for the best start to a season if he wins tomorrow’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The German is well on his way to a fifth consecutive title – his seventh in total – but Mosley feels his unprecedented run of success will not damage the sport’s long-term prospects.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has already claimed he would welcome a Schumacher whitewash of 18 victories, now Mosley insists he is not concerned by the lack of variety on the winner’s rostrum.

He said: “I don’t think Michael’s total domination has hurt the sport because this happens in many sports. You get a supremely gifted performer in the right team and they win everything.

“Even when a man is on his own, as in heavyweight boxing, you get eras where there is just nobody that can challenge the person for a number of years. That is part of sport.”
