Magee hangs up gloves after attack

Eamonn Magee tonight revealed that his boxing career is over.

WBU welterweight champion Magee suffered a broken leg and a fractured knee after a brutal assault at the weekend in Belfast, when he was dragged from his car and beaten with baseball bats.

Magee said: “I’m so disgusted. I was to sign to fight Sharmba Mitchell this week but I can guarantee that I will not fight again.”

He also admitted that the whole experience was “one of the most frightening experiences of my life“.

The 32-year-old is defiantly determined to stay within the sport and is keen to either start training or even managing boxers once he fully recovers.

Magee’s coach John Breen, who took him to the Commonwealth light-welterweight title and WBU welterweight belt, said he was devastated by the news.

Breen said: “I feel so sorry for him and I just can’t take it in.

It’s hard to believe that he was being set up for some big fights and now they’ll never happen for him.

“I don’t think we ever saw the very best of Eamonn Magee and now we never will see the best of him in the ring.

“He was a world class fighter, who feared nobody and he could give anyone in the world a fight.

“It’s such a sickening way for his career to end.”
