Lee secures European medal

Nineteen-year-old Limerick southpaw Andy Lee has earned a medal at the European Championships in Pula, Croatia this evening.

He beat Serbian Nikola Sjekloca in a tight 28-20 quarter-final points decision and in doing so qualified for the Athens Olympics next August.

Lee’s tall, rangy stride had his opponent in trouble in the second round and the Irishman, second at the World juniors in Cuba, used his right hook and left jab combination to claim the final round against the 25-year-old eastern European.

The Castleconnell teenager will fight German Lukas Wilaschek, second at the 2002 Europeans in Perm, in the semi-final after he out-pointed Czech champion Tomas Adamek 36-31.
