Toyota set points targets

Big-spending Toyota have targeted points-scoring finishes in every race when they embark on their third season in Formula One this year.

The Germany-based team launched their 2004 challenge in Cologne, aiming to force their way further up the grid.

"I believe we will achieve points-scoring results during each weekend in 2004," said new team principal Tsutomu Tomita at the unveiling of the TF1-04.

"I also believe we can score our first ever podium finish. I'm sure we will make a big step forward in 2004.

"At the same time we will underline Toyota's passion to be a future Formula One force. We are determined to make Toyota's third year in Formula One the basis of our future."

Toyota, who finished their second season in eighth place in the championship, are reputed to have one of the biggest budgets in F1 - with €290m backing from Japan.

The team will be looking to use their resources to force their way closer to the big four of Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Renault in 2004.

"We want to be racing at the front," said new technical director Mike Gascoyne, whom Toyota poached from rivals Renault.

"That is not going to happen overnight, but I hope this car will help close the gap to the top teams.

"Ultimately we want to be winning world championships, so we'll be looking to get the best out of the car this year and build for the future."

Veteran Frenchman Olivier Panis and Brazil's Cristiano da Matta will be in the Toyota cockpit for a second season when the campaign gets under way in Melbourne in March.
