Colin McRae made a creditable start to his first-ever Dakar Rally by posting the 28th quickest time on today’s first stage.

The Scot, who turned to the 6,800-mile trek across two continents after finding himself without a World Rally Championship drive, was just inside the top 30 on an event which attracted over 900 entries.
