Schumacher wins US Grand Prix

Michael Schumacher swept to victory in the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis to move within touching distance of his sixth world title.

The German produced a faultless display as other racers failed to get to grips with the changeable conditions, although Kimi Raikkonen’s second place means the race for the title will go down to the final grand prix of the season in Japan next month.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen was third for Sauber.

Juan Pablo Montoya’s championship dream is over, though, after a penalty for his involvement in Rubens Barrichello’s early exit cost him dear and the Colombian could only manage sixth place.

There was agony for Britain’s Jenson Button when his BAR blew up on lap 42 when he had seemed set for a podium finish, but Justin Wilson secured his first world championship point when claiming eighth for Jaguar.
