World title holder Michael Schumacher stormed away from challenger Juan Pablo Montoya at the start of today's Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Schumacher leads Montoya's BMW Williams in the championship by only one point with three races left.

Schumacher scorched away to the first corner and despite a daring overtaking move in the first lap, Montoya could not catch his Ferrari rival.

Meanwhile, Schumacher's team mate Rubens Barrichello lost and regained third position, while there were two retirements on the first lap - Jaguar's Justin Wilson and Renault's Jarno Trulli, who had worked his way up to third place before engine problems saw his race end when it had barely begun.

Italian Grand Prix latest (after 11 laps):

1 M Schumacher (Ferrari)

3 R Barrichello (Ferrari)

4 K Raikkonen (McLaren)

5 D Coulthard (McLaren)

6 M Gene (BMW-Williams)

7 Olivier Panis (Toyota)

8 J Villeneuve (BAR)
