Szabo may consider retirement after run

Gabriela Szabo, Olympic 5,000m champion and nemesis of Sonia O'Sullivan, admits she could be reaching the end of her career following a disappointing performance in the women's’ 5,000m final at the World Athletics Championships in Paris.

Szabo, also 5,000m indoor world record holder, finished a lowly 11th in Saturday’s final.

“I am very angry,” said the 27-year-old. “I couldn’t run. I don’t know what has happened to me in recent weeks. After qualifying, I didn’t want to run any more.

“Perhaps the end of my career is near but I won’t make any decisions yet. I’ll have some medical tests to see what happened.”

The race was also a huge disappointment for O'Sullivan, who trailed home in 15th place.
