Ireland has already won a first gold medal of the games through Lara Jane Dunne. The 19-year-old won the 100m freestyle aquatics.

Cynthia Coffin of the United States team has won the first gold medal of the Special Olympic World Games 2003, winning Division 3 of the 10,000 metres in Morton Stadium yesterday.
