American cyclist Lance Armstrong has won this year's Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award in Monte Carlo.

Armstrong, who secured the Comeback of the Year award three years ago, won the Tour de France for the fourth consecutive time last year after overcoming cancer.

American tennis star Serena Williams, who currently holds all four Grand Slam titles, was named Sportswoman of the Year last night, while Real Madrid striker Ronaldo won the Comeback of the Year award.

The footballer also collected the Team of the Year award on behalf of World Cup winners Brazil.

Chinese basketball star Yao Ming picked up the award for Newcomer of the Year.
